Pseudoarthrosis in ankylosing spondylitis mimicking infectious diskitis: MR appearance.

چکیده
A 73-year-old woman with suspected infectious diskitis was transferred to our institution. She had a 1 0-year history of ankylosing spondylitis and had had progressive kyphosis with intermittent pain in the thoracolumbar region for almost a year. She had no history of trauma, and her spine was nontender. She was afebrile, and her WBC count was normal. Plain films and tomograms of the thoracolumbar spine (Fig . 1A) showed a large zone of destruction involving the T11-T12 disk and adjacent vertebral bodies contiguous with a fracture through the posterior elements of T1 1. CT (Fig. 1 B) confirmed these findings and , in addition, showed paraspinal soft-tissue swelling. MR (Figs. 1 C and 1 D) showed the signal characteristics of the involved region . Cultures of material obtained percutaneously and intraoperatively from the fibrous disk space were negative for bacteria, fungi, and mycobacteria. The destructive changes have not progressed during the 2 years since posterior spinal fusion , and the patient remains asymptomatic.

Surgical treatment of spinal pseudoarthrosis in ankylosing spondylitis.
BACKGROUND In ankylosing spondylitis (AS), the spine with osteoporotic changes is fragile and vulnerable to trauma. Patients may develop spinal pseudoarthrosis (SP), whose clinical features are usually misdiagnosed as a tuberculous infection. This study reports our experience with surgical treatment for SP in AS. METHODS Eight patients with AS and SP at the thoracolumbar area were treated sur...

Background: Increased incidence of renal stone has been reported in ankylosing spondylitis (AS), but unlike some well-known renal involvements, they have not been fully studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of AS with urolithiasis and also the relation between urinary stone and severity markers. Methods: One hundred-sixty three AS patients were included in a cross-s...
متن کاملPseudo-septic hip arthritis as the presenting symptom of ankylosing spondylitis: a case series and review of the literature.
INTRODUCTION Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) typically presents with inflammatory back pain and stiffness, but severe hip involvement may also be present. In this study, we evaluated the frequency of severe hip arthritis mimicking septic arthritis as initial presenting symptom of AS. METHODS Utilising billing records, we retrospectively studied all AS patients seen from the years 2006 to 2009 at ...
متن کاملAseptic spondylodiskitis in rheumatic diseases.
Aseptic diskitis is relatively common. Several rheumatic diseases involving the spine may have this complication. As this condition mimic infectious diskitis, it is important to recognize it. Clinically, it is characterised by vertebral pain of an inflammatory nature, occasionally accompanied by fever and an increase in the erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Radiologically, the decrease in the art...

They are characteristically seen long after the cervical apophyseal joints have fused and vertebral osteoporosis has developed. This complication is consistent with the mechanically unstable situation that dev...
